Here's what you didn't know about cactus names

Have you ever thought why some gymnocalyciums have a suffix of "ii" ?

For instance, G. Mihanovichii, Anisitsii, and Friedrichii...

They're not purely coincidences.. they're done intentionally most of the time.

But why or what does it connote?

CLUES:

1. Gymnocalycium mihanovichii was discovered in 1903 by Alberto Vojtěch Frič.

2. Adolfo friedrich - discovered friedrichii (1933?)

3. Karl Schumann - Anisitsii ?

At first glance, you can all notice the names.

What are they? ====> MALE

So typically, when you see a name ending in "ii" you'll get an idea who made it.

It's also a practice to prolong or extend the sound of "i" like ---> mihanovichi-i (mi-ha-no-vi-chi-ay) but of course it's all up to you. Saying it as a short mihanovichii is not wrong at all. (But the prolonged Ii sounds way cooler than the short one! 😆)

Alright! After this, I want all of you to drop gymnocalycium names ending in "ii" put them below at the comment section!

Next one would be the female counter part of "ii"

Guess what it is!
