Gymnocalycium: "Flower or Pup?"

PICTURE A
Many have asked this and still have difficulties knowing which is which. So here's a short guide with illustations for better understanding.

Before anything else, Gymnocalycium is known as "naked calyx" which means that the flowers has no thorns or hairs.

PICTURE B

As you can see on pictures A, B, C, and D, the shape of the buds coming out of the areoles look like scales without visible hairs or thorns. As the flower bud grows, you can see the bare scale-like patterns until it blooms.

PICTURE C

The difference with a pup is that as it comes out from the areole, you can readily see the thorns as seen on pictures E and F.
PICTURE D

Now you know! Happy planting!
