Dissecting Cactus Addiction

Can you still remember the first time you've laid your eyes on those cactus and succulents? Did you fell in love immediately? Or you are one of those who didn't like it at first?

When I was a kid, we had this regular cactus which is unknown to us but it is there, in front of our house, bigger than a regular man. For me then, it is the only type of cactus available here in the Philippines. It is a flat cactus with no visible thorns. A green flat cactus with lots of carvings and writings made by kids and passersby, now I know it’s a type of Opuntia. Later it was knocked down and was replaced by ornamentals. My mom, being a myth believer, told me that thorny plants brings bad luck which is also the reason why we didn’t get involved on those euphorbia craze a few years ago.

Being a plant lover, I didn’t realize that I have actually grown a few cactus and succulents as I grew up not until a decade ago when my family got involved in the wedding industry and got more exposed on ornamentals and other plants. Then I got married and my husband often brings me this rose like plant which I have no idea on how to take care of. I just leave it outside with the other plants basking under the sun and bathing during rainy days and even swimming on the flooded garden floor.

Man! Nobody told me that these plants will bring me anxiety as my interest grew. Whenever I see wilted leaves, it is like I am having heart attacks. I even cried over a mushy cactus (Mammillaria) because somebody overwatered it. I’ve been spending most of my time researching for the names, how to care, the types, and I have been spending more on buying cactus and succulents than on my clothes and gadgets (that’s the reason why you always see me wearing the same clothes again and again. Just kidding!).

Starting with those three for one hundred plants up to the point where I spend half of my salary buying plants (that is how addicted I was). Until now, my husband and I are still into it but became pickier with what to purchase. We do not consider ourselves as expert as we still have a lot to learn. We just enjoy collecting and planting.
Whether you are a newbie or an experienced one, may you find in your heart the fulfillment and happiness that your cactus and succulents bring like what we are having right now.
Happy planting!
